WHAT IS THE CURLY METHOD?

WHAT IS THE CURLY METHOD?

The Curly Method is a hair washing routine in order to eliminate all sulfates, silicones, mineral oils and waxes from the hair, to respect and define our curly or wavy hair with the aim of returning to our natural hair.

The more hydrated our hair is, the more defined our curls will be.

It's time to let our hair express itself as it is!

The author of this practice is the hairstylist Lorraine Massey , she described the detailed procedure in her book 'Curly Girl The Handbook' .

This method speaks to us of naturalness, of respect for nature and for ourselves.

This routine evolved and not only managed to get many people a natural curl, but it also stopped stigmatizing curls.

Many people with curly hair began to include treatments and procedures from this method and began to search for increasingly natural and less harmful products.

What do we need to know before diving into the Curly Girl method ?

Before starting, it must be taken into account that the effects will not be immediate, there is a transition period , since it is a change in habits towards a conscious decision to stop using products with harmful ingredients to recover the naturalness of your hair.

And… where to start?

Well, there are two ways, the Big Chop method that consists of doing a haircut to remove as much damaged hair as possible . This option is faster since much of the hair that has chemicals is directly removed, but it is also more drastic.

If it hurts to say goodbye to a large part of your hair, you can opt for the Transition Phase, which consists of a slower process, where you will have to let your natural hair grow , and treat it with chemical-free products and without using any method. artificial drying. Of course you will need more patience to see the results.

How long does this period last?

This process takes time and this will depend on the type of hair, the damage it has suffered and the method you choose (Big shop or Transition phase).

To start, it takes at least 3 weeks for the hair to adapt to the new routine. If you have to remove chemical buildup, it can take anywhere from 1.5 to three months. And, if you have also done dyes, bleaching, straightening, etc., the process can be longer

but... cheer up the result is really worth it!

What will I need to get started?

Forget about all those products you buy in the supermarket, from today you will have to choose products suitable for the curly method , you will have to find out about their composition and check that they are free of:

  • Sulfates
  • mineral oils
  • silicones
  • waxes
  • alcohols

The Curly Method is not a product: it is a lifestyle and a way of living with a SIMPLE routine of only 3 steps, using a maximum of 3 to 4 products .

It is learning to care for and celebrate your hair in its most natural form.

Your ROUTINE step by step

1- WASH

  1. Last wash with shampoo with sulfates and free of silicones :

Before starting with the products suitable for this method, you should wash your hair for the LAST time with a shampoo with sulfates, but without silicones, why? you need more powerful surfactants (because they are responsible for forming the foam) that drag all the rest of the styling products, silicones and other doubtful components that remain in your hair well. Let's just say it's the perfect way to reset your hair and start fresh.

  1. Washing Shampoo suitable curly method:

Now, if we wash our hair regularly with a shampoo free of sulfates and silicones, what we call Low Poo shampoo.

2 - CONDITIONER

The second step is to apply conditioner after the first shampoo. You can also replace the conditioner with a light mask.

It is important to apply it from the media to the ends and take the opportunity to untangle the hair with an open-toothed comb or with your fingers.

Lie on your stomach with damp/wet hair and apply conditioner and detangle hair with your fingers. Then, little by little, with your hands full of water, squeeze the hair repeatedly to ensure that the conditioner penetrates well into your hair.

Lastly, rinse out the conditioner.

What is Co-Wash?

There is a technique within the method that is to wash directly with conditioner and not with shampoo. This technique of cleaning hair with conditioner is known as Co-Wash.

For the conditioner to become our shampoo we have to massage the scalp for at least 5 minutes. And then rinse it well.

You can alternate shampooing and conditioning washes a week.

  • If your hair is wavy, fine and oily, we recommend that you start washing with sulfate-free and silicone-free shampoos suitable for the Curly Method.
  • If your hair is curly and dry, it is advisable that you start the Co-Wash technique from the beginning after cleaning the hair with a shampoo with sulfates but without silicones.

The most important thing when it comes to defining which technique is best for you, is to know your HAIR, listen to what it needs and based on that choose your path, the one that defines you and makes you UNIQUE, like your CURLS!

3 - DRYING AND DEFINITION

It is about the use of products to define and achieve that all the work we have done in the previous steps is reflected.

You can use creams, gels or foams, but they must NOT contain silicones or drying alcohols.

Once applied to very damp hair, dry it by sliding (not squeezing), with a microfiber towel or a T-shirt (do not use a cotton towel because it frizzes the hair).

We recommend letting the hair dry naturally and in the open air without any dryer or anything that could damage it.

MAINTENANCE

Now, how do we maintain and refresh those curls throughout the day, or when we get up in the morning?

We teach you two techniques that you surely know

  • Water + Pulsing

This technique consists of applying water to our hair while we squeeze it with our hands, surely you have done it all your life without knowing that by applying water to our dry hair we make the products that we applied the first time activate again. And we create a renewing effect of curls.

  • Conditioner + Pressing

The same technique but with conditioner (without rinsing), leave in.

It contains essential elements that refresh the curl and if, in addition, you add a little water to your hands by applying the product with the pulsing technique , the effect is multiplied by one hundred.

REMEMBER to use a hair mask twice a month to provide extra nutrition and hydration to your hair. Apply it for 15-30 minutes and then rinse the mask off.

Use a microfiber towel or a t-shirt and apply heat with the dryer so that the mask penetrates better.

What is the relationship with your hair?

Historically, women have had to adapt to the beauty stereotypes that society has wanted to impose on us. Regardless of how we really were, we have wanted to imitate fashions, styles, that had nothing to do with our nature...

This is how we have adopted unhealthy practices for our hair and the environment, little by little losing the personality of our hair.

Make friends with your hair, reconnect with your essence, recover the personality of your hair. What touched you DEFINES you and DISTINGUISHES you and that is what makes you UNIQUE.

Let your hair express itself freely... accept it and be part of the change, learning to value who we are and recovering our physical and emotional health.

You have the power!

Keymes offers you a completely renewing conscious self-care routine.

We invite you to get to know your hair and learn how to take care of it by strengthening it, bringing out shine and natural volume, without complications.
